Terms of use
The terms for using Socrates, in plain words. Last updated 5 November 2026 (beta).
Who provides it
Socrates is published by Hermes Software (Themis Angelopoulos, an independent developer based in Greece). Contact: Hermes_creative@proton.me.
What it is
- Socrates is a free beta. It is open source under the MIT licence; the licence of the code is in the project's repository.
- The four philosophers (Socrates, Diogenes, Plato and Aristotle) are artificial characters. They are not the real people, and they can be wrong, including about facts of their own lives and works.
- Socrates is not a medical, legal, financial, psychological or crisis service, and its replies are not professional advice. If you are in danger or thinking of hurting yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line.
Who may use it
The app is for people aged 16 and over. If you are younger, please do not use it.
Your key and your provider
- To write replies the app uses an AI provider that you choose (Anthropic or OpenAI), with a key that you enter. The key stays on your device. You pay your provider yourself, and the provider's own terms and privacy policy apply to what it receives.
- You are responsible for the key and for the costs the provider charges.
What you may do
- Use the app for your own thinking and conversation.
- Do not use it to harm others, to break the law, or to try to make it produce harmful content. The app refuses clear requests of that kind.
Your data
Your conversations and notes stay on your device and you can export or delete them at any time. The details are in the privacy policy.
No warranty
The beta is provided "as is", without a promise that it is correct, complete, always available or free of errors. To the extent the law allows, Hermes Software is not liable for losses that come from using it. Nothing in these terms limits rights that you have by law as a consumer, or liability that cannot be excluded by law.
Changes
These terms may change as the app leaves beta, for example when paid features are added. The date above shows the latest version. Using the app after a change means accepting it.
